Its main use is probably simply as an interface between IO pins (such
as the PID gain pins) and output pins. You can't normally net Output
to IO pins.

However, there have been occasions where I have been inconvenienced by
the fact that output pins get written to each and every cycle. I just
can't recall the circumstances, possibly a comp which wanted to the
use the same variable internally.
