There is a well-established, open-source, LinuxCNC-supported library
of motion control components for FPGA/VHDL. It is mainly used in the
Mesa cards (because Mesa wrote it) but it has been used by other
people in their own hardware. I think Ariasrobo use a modified version
(in Mesa Hardware) and
