Maybe I've answered my own question, but I located this:

ftp://ftp.isd.mel.nist.gov/pub/emc/emcsoft/

There's no more cvs.linuxcnc.org, but the log at git.linuxcnc starts
with:

John Kasunich [Sat, 11 Oct 2003 17:30:53 -0400 (21:30 +0000)]
Initial revision

I'll go research it myself, but if anyone knows how to checkout the
"Initial revision" version, that would be helpful to know. The thing
is, I remember the decision to convert to git was in Wichita in (I
think) 2009. That must mean that some of the old cvs history was
imported into git as JohnK's initial commit is dated 2003. Is that true?

Thanks,
Matt
