The majority of the industrial control engineers in the world would 
probably disagree that Ladder is ancient.  Implementing state machines 
in ladder is simple.  I'm not found of
Classic Ladders editor but it does get the job done for simple 
implementations and changes can be done on the fly.

If you at Comp a little differently - the component to generates real 
time Hal components, you will see that it can be used as a scripting 
tool.  Not ideal perhaps, but it can suffice in some situations.
