Since vfs11_vfd was mentioned, a summary:

- it used to live on my own repo here:
http://git.mah.priv.at/gitweb/vfs11-vfd.git
- I have added it to master a while ago (it is not in 2.5)
- see
http://git.linuxcnc.org/gitweb?p=linuxcnc.git;a=tree;f=src/hal/user_comps/vfs11_vfd;h=b461634b76c166440bfbbaac2443ca0d31d003f0;hb=a4e9c9adaafd639113de919fcc162540f9aac3ab

I cannot tell which version
http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?New_File_From_Vfs11 is based upon.
However, since switching to libmodbus3 I have added the following:

- added Modbus-over-TCP support (client and server)
- configuration through inifile
- restructured the code to make it easier to use as a base for a new driver

I've tried the 'generic modbus component to end all modbus components' idea,
and gave up on it after modbus device manual #4 or 5 or so - the differences
are so substantial that the gain isnt worth the effort IMO
