I could see thermal being an issue if you had coolant running through the machine to stabilize the temperature of all the pieces parts (we used that trick once to get two plates machined to 0.00005"). But I can see where that would be a problem for most shops that don't "get it" and why it might be necessary. If there was some other problem with thermal I am not sure what it would be...
