Tapping and die heads need the spindle to stop adancing into the work
some distance before the depth required,
the threading action continues to pull the holder out of the head till
it hits its trip point.
so set the depth by knowing where the tip point is
dwell time by your spindle speed from stop to trip for full depth
then dwell(head has reversed)/pull out(die opened)

easier done on a capstan as you listen for the click
blind holes should not be a problem likewise for shoulders with an
opening diehead

I have a hatred for friction heads, I wonder how many taps they break
