The Xenomai developers have helped fix numerous problems compiling
Xenomai kernels using distro kernel package .configs and build tools.
After WAYYY too much time and headache learning to package kernels for
Debian/Ubuntu, I hope my alpha-quality Xenomai kernel package PPA is
finally ready for bold testers.

===== About =====

The packages in this PPA are *experimental*, ready for alpha testing ONLY!

Distro:  Ubuntu Precise
Architectures:  i686 and amd64
Xenomai version:  v2.6.2.1, released yesterday
Kernel version:  v3.5.7 vanilla

The kernel .config files are based on the Ubuntu upstream kernel 3.5
packages. They contain only minimal and well-documented changes for
Xenomai, to ensure the packages run on a large variety of hardware and
are easily reproduced and upgraded for future releases of Xenomai
running on new kernel versions.

===== How to use =====

Instructions for installing are in the section 'Experimental Ubuntu
Xenomai kernel package repository' on the wiki:
http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?XenomaiKernel

Please run the regression tests as described in the following section of
the wiki to ensure Xenomai is working correctly. I'd appreciate reports
of both success and failure, with info about your hardware (especially
32/64 bit, CPU and chipset) and a pastebin of the regression run.

===== Remaining problems =====

There are a few remaining problems to fix. The kernel image file name
is missing the complete version ('/boot/vmlinuz-3.5.7' instead of
'/boot/vmlinuz-3.5.7-xenomai-2.6.2.1'). An updated build is running
right now that hopefully will fix this.

Also, package dependencies are still missing, and there are a few more
things on the wish-list aimed at package maintainers.

===== Future availability =====

I plan to continue maintaining the kernel .configs for Xenomai and to
maintain packages for RedHat-like distros.

I don't want to spend much more time on the actual packaging for
Debian-like distros, but I believe LinuxCNC's success depends on
up-to-date packages for major distros. In order to ensure sustained
availability, I am hiring someone more expert than myself to fix the
remaining problems, build packages for other Ubuntu/Debian releases, and
to update the packages for future releases of Xenomai.

The Xenomai devs have expressed interest in hosting the RedHat packages
on xenomai.org, and have also begun thinking about packaging for Debian
and Ubuntu. Official support will add to the continued availability of
updated packages.

===== Ok, I'll shut up already =====

But first, thanks to Gilles Chanteperdrix and the other Xenomai
developers for extremely responsive help over two weeks to help nail the
bugs. Thanks to Michael Haberler for putting up with my whining while
learning Ubuntu packaging, but curses for encouraging me to accept the
task in the first place. ;)

        John
