the existing 'sim' build is technically no different from the 
'--with-threads=posix' build in the RTOS development branches

the unified binary would carry RTAPI shared libraries for the whole bestiary 
(generic, RT_PREEMPT, Xenomai-user, RTAI-kernel) and do the right thing based 
on autodetection at startup

software stepping would be a tad slow; for servo-only or hardware stepgens it 
should be fine
