It is somewhat related to running mill-style G-code on lathes I think. On a lathe you might like G2 and G3 to work in XZ if that is the only plane you have. It is also a little counter-intuitive that you need to look up from underneath to determine the direction of G2 and G3 and the sense of G41 / G42.
