When I looked into this, it appeared to be a bug already reported in debian http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=622359
I did not find a suitable workaround. But there is a new workaround suggested since the last time I read the bug http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=622359#20 Apparently you have to write ":ascii-ids:" somewhere in each .txt file. I didn't try this.
