Sorry, I just had to rock the boat. ;-)
I don't think it's rocking the boat. There does seem to be a disagreement in the function of the master branch, and the name likely isn't helping resolve the ambiguity. In this thread, I'm hearing that master is supposed to be the place where new ideas get tried and it's OK to break things, but my impression (and what seems to be the general use case for the master branch) is that it's supposed to be stable enough to run real machines and there are a *LOT* of people using it in the field. It also seems to me like this was the case well before 2.6 became "overdue", although it has probably worsened as 2.6 continues to be delayed. While I don't think names are particularly important, if master is really supposed to be a "playground" perhaps naming it "unstable" would help get the idea across if it's really supposed to be somewhat experimental. ;-) ...and I still think an "unstable" *AND* a "testing" branch are *BOTH* needed and useful (along with the stable branch, which doesn't generally seem to be in dispute). And I don't much care which the master branch of today turns into, as long as the other gets created! :) -- Charles Steinkuehler char...@steinkuehler.net
