I don't think there is any need for this detective work, it is no secret that the lathe is using LinuxCNC, it was Tormach who came up with the Fanuc-style tool change patch for their lathe and Tormach were at the Fest last summer. What they have done is produced a shiny (arguably too shiny) GUI for lathe work.
