In general, once a branch is released only bug fixes are pushed to it.
sometimes stand-alone components are added such as new hardware drivers.
These are allowed because unless you load them it is hard to affect anything 
badly.
If there is any doubt about whether you should or shouldn't push to a released
branch, you should ask the release manager (Seb right now)

This is for stability, we never want to break configs or crash user's 
production machines.

If you feel strongly about search and replace in 2.6, confirm with Seb and I 
will cherry pick it.
I'd feel better if we got some feedback from users in master first however.
