Gene,

It has been nearly a decade since I had to rescue a grub install.  
Normally I would boot from a live CD/DVD and attempt a repair the system 
without using grub at the command line.  One thing to look for on the 
net is for "grub rescue"

  This should explain the esoterics of grub high magic.
