Gene, It has been nearly a decade since I had to rescue a grub install. Normally I would boot from a live CD/DVD and attempt a repair the system without using grub at the command line. One thing to look for on the net is for "grub rescue" <https://www.linux.com/learn/tutorials/776643-how-to-rescue-a-non-booting-grub-2-on-linux/> This should explain the esoterics of grub high magic.
