I would tend to use magnetic gear tooth sensors rather than an optical sensor which would be sensitive to getting fouled with oil and chips. My plan was to groove the bottom face of the spindle pulley and embed a toothed steel ring. The teeth would face down. A pin can be set for the index sensor.
