I wonder if this is another manifestation of a problem I have with the
rpi 3b's own keyboard and mouse? Logged it from an ssh session it works
100% of the time, but it will gets spells of throwing away keyboard and
mouse events from its own bt connected konsole's. wired keyboard and
mouse don't fix it.

And its dependant on the bootup somehow, and worse with the newer
realtime kernels. And if a good boot is obtained, it runs perfectly for
weeks at a time. There have been times I've had to reboot it 3 or 4
times to get 100% responses from its own keyboard or mouse Also, with
the kernel I'm using note that you'll have to call up the config and set
the keyboard repeat speed, it reboots to about 100/second repeats.
Setting that manually after the reboot may be part of this problem, and
at repeat speeds below 20/sec, its much better behaved.

When, after a bootup, its a problem, reboot it again, reset the keyboard
repeat, and check it next thing after that to see if its now working
100%. My theory is that something about the pi's internal usb hub that
almost all i/o except the radio and the gpio have to go thru, isn't
always getting initialized properly. But its only a theory. The gpio
doesn't have to go thru that internal hub, so my machine, which has a
7i90 interface and 7i42TA's to get from an spi interface to the machine,
is running the spi in half duplex, writing to the 7i90 at 42 megabaud,
and reading the responses from the 7i90 at 25 megabaud, is running my
machine flawlessly. Zero spi com errors. I've managed to get the radio
turned off and to stay off, which I think may also have helped. My
network is all hard wired, and a neighbor thinks its cute for his
smartphone to use the pi's radio for his phones net access, to the tune
of 80GB a month! I found that with wireshark. So all my radios are
turned off unless one of my sons is visiting & needs a smartphone
hookup.
