I suspect that had to do with either your video cable or perhaps the particular
kernel you were testing. I have had that issue on numbers of 32-bit kernels and
the problem has almost always been the video cable or connection (especially
with VGA cables).
I've used 64-bit kernels with the i915 driver on many different computers now
including an N3050 celeron without any problems.

afair, the intel graphics driver i915 is not compatible with 64-bit
kernel. tried to run it on a celeron (N3150?) and display resolution
was limited to something like 800x600.
