A question raised in issue #695

LinuxCNC appears to only support run-in-place and the creation of .deb files.
But some Linuxes don't use .debs.
Is there any way to compile and install for those systems?

There's not, at least in our repo. I wouldn't be surprised if lots of folks have forks with partial support for building & installing under other distros, but i think only one has offered a PR so far (he was trying to build LinuxCNC under FreeBSD, got partway there, and offered some portability patches along the way).

I have no personal interest in making LinuxCNC build and install on non-deb platforms, but I won't resist at all if someone else wants to work on that project.
