Thank you all for the input!
Another suggestion from IRC is for measuring tool wear and detecting
broken or chipped tools.
Sheet alignment is also useful for milling and drilling two sided PCB's
as well as pick-n-place.
JT posted this on the forums for automatic sheet alignment as well:

Part alignment for pick-n-place.
Edge detection
Corner detection
Finding centers of round holes, squares and rectangles.
Making these filters available to users to be able to link them together
like HAL components or take their output and run some user app is
another goal.

Possibly also record a skeleton of a sheet of material so it could be
displayed on a screen preview.
Its often the case that a sheet of material is not fully consumed in one
session so the sheet needs to be stored and retrieved next time. Knowing
what was available to cut would be useful.
Also QTPlasmac has a good example of doing sheet alignment with a laser
pointer. (and possibly a camera).

Which features would you find useful other than edge detection, corner

It would be helpful if this could interface and work with the "align"
code kit, which records two points on either axis, and diddles the
coordinate map to make the machine square to the workpiece even if the
pallete is not keyed into the table. The addition of a correction map
based on probing the Z, like the better 3d printers have would also be
helpful on gantry machines with unflat extruded alu stick beds. My guess
is thats 100% of those machines.
Thank you Bari.
Cheers, Gene Heskett.
