I asked a friend of mine about them and following is the text:

A defibrillator applied ACROSS the heart stops all electrical activity and
then the heart resumes it's normal rhythmn.  It is possible to pass the
shock just across the ventricular muscle which will only stop a particular
ventricular rhythm, or ACROSS the atria, which will stop the intrinsic
artial rhythm momentarily.  The results seen depend on the state of health
of the heart, the state of health of the cardiac electrical conduction
system, voltage of the shock, duration of the shock, and several other
variables.
