From: [email protected] Subject: re: Certification of Product Safety Personnel Thanks for all of the replies so far. While my first letter mentioned qualifying product safety personnel during an assessment, let's forget about that. It was a poor choice of words and the situation about assessments a poor example, and I apologize for leading everyone astray.
Let's try this instead. What I'd like information on is the external qualification or certification of product safety personnel. Many disciplines have voluntary or mandatory Certification/Licencing programs set up. Product safety does not have a mandatory program, so I'm looking for the "voluntary" programs, which may help substantiate the product safety professionals' knowledge, experience and qualifications. So far we've gotten: - A four year college degree in engineering? Product Safety is only a very small portion of the curriculum. - Certified as a PE? UL uses this to qualify personnel with non-engineering backgrounds as engineers, but Product Safety is again only a very small portion. Manning Rose offered that this may be the best "Certification" we can hope for at this moment. - Certified Safety Professional, by the ASSE? Manning Rose summed this up by saying that while it does have some product safety, the bulk is in plant safety. - Certification in Product Safety Management? Pete Perkins provided the following: "Qualified practitioners engaged in various aspect of product safety management can obtain registration thru the Board of Certified Product Safety Management. This Board is an independent organization whose aim is to promote the highest level of professional performance and integrity in the field. More information about the board, as well as information about qualifying can be obtained from the Director, Harold Gordon, Board of PS Management, 8009 Carita Ct, Bethesda, MD 20817, 301/984-8969." - World Accreditation Board in Rolla Missouri? Manning Rose mentioned this one but didn't have any specific details. - International Product Safety Management Certification Board Listed under "Professional Society Affiliations" on http://www. kaco.com/safety.htm. I have e-mailed them asking for more info. Note: If anyone's interested in PL, product safety and law firms, check out kaco's web site. Does anyone know of any other Certifications that may lend credibility to product safety professionals? The above seem specifically for the US, how about other countries? Thanks again for all of the replies. Art Kampmeier A-Pex International Co., Ltd.
