KA>I am a safety person who needs to answer a question
KA>from one of our sales people on the question of
KA>"EMC" verses "RFI".

KA>Is there anyone out there who can explanation the
KA>differences between "EMC" and "RFI" and how they
KA>relate to each other.

EMC means Electromagnetic Compliance

RFI means Radio Frequency Interference.

EMC refers to *ALL* the generic requirements of complying with
everything. RFI (radiated emissions) is a subset of that, referring to
the limits of radiated emissions.

EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) is the conducted noise that goes back
up the power mains.

The new requirement (specifically asked for by the EU) for total EMC is
"susceptibility" where your product is inundated with both conducted
noise and radiated noise.

KA>Sun Microsystems, Inc.

Kathy,

You have some very capable people there at Sun that deal in this. I've
seen the results of their work - all those fingers on their PCBs and
aluminum plates that bolt together.

They should be able to help you also.
