Kathy,

 Quickly;

RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) would be just that, any
radio frequency emissions measured - radiating from your product,
also more commonly refered to as EMI (Electro-Magnetic Interference)
because this covers outside the Radio Frequencie bands limits.

 EMI:
Your sales person starts up their personal computer, and their
neighbor can't get his favorite radio station... their pc is
 producing RFI.

EMC (Electro-Magnetic Compatibility) includes EMI and also "Immunity".
Immunity, also refered to as susceptibility, is tested against
any of several phenomena; such as immunity to radiated EMI, immunity
to ESD (Electro-Static Discharge), immunity to power line transients,
etc., etc., etc.

 EMC:
Your sales person walks across the carpet and plugs a diskette
into their pc, discharging a static-electric zap at the same time.
Their pc DOES NOT reset or reboot - it is Immune to (has met the
criteria for Electro-Magnetic "Compatibility" with regards to) ESD.

My version of the RFI vs. EMC question anyway, for what it's worth...
I hope it helps.

 Best regards,

Hi,

I am a safety person who needs to answer a question
from one of our sales people on the question of
"EMC" verses "RFI".

Is there anyone out there who can explanation the
differences between "EMC" and "RFI" and how they
relate to each other.

I would appreciate your comments.
