Max, since I work mostly with SCSI periperals, I haven't ever thought of asking the monitor manufacturers about their signals. I thought that the standards for VGA and Mac video pretty much had all of the bases covered (stupid me). Good food for thought...
I did operate under the assumption that the video signals were single-ended analog signals (please correct me if I'm wrong - I know about the equivalent of a mosquito's memory about video signals). I have been through a number of cheap monitors that passed emissions for a while then failed. These same monitors wouldn't pass immunity. I've finally settled on an extremely old Apple 13" RGB (Sony-based) monitor for my Mac system and a Sony 15 SF-II for my Intel-based systems. I think that the older monitor is more stable, but they both get me by just fine. All of the usual disclaimers about living and dead people apply. Steve Chin StreamLogic Corp. Years ago I did a survey of a variety of monitor manufacturers to see if any of them used differential input. All of them said no. In addition, I have checked PC's and workstations from many manufacturers and never found any that didn't have the (video) cable return connected to the case. I assume, however, that without this connection of return to the cabinet, a system would probably flunk emission tests as well as immunity tests. Max Kelson [email protected]
