If a component is Recognized there are Conditions of Acceptability or C of A's included in the recognition report. These conditions will/may outline test critera as well as additional requirements to be applied when used in an end use product.
UL cannot release a report or C of A's without written approval from the owner of the File. Since the complete File includes detailed construction description many manufacturers do not want to release this. You may find it easier to just ask for the C of A's. Note that when dealing with labs other than UL (i.e. ETL, MET, etc.), they do not have access to the UL files either. The other labs must go through the same process to obtain component information. I always stress that a manufacturer does not want to evaluate someone elses component unless he/she has no other choice. Construction controls will be placed on the component in the end use product file. This can cause a problem down the road when the component manufacturer changes the construction forcing the end use manufacturer the have the component re-evaluated. As for the cost consideration. UL should be able to provide you with a cost breakdown or difference in the product evaluation using a Recognized Component verses a custom component. However, bear in mind, additional costs might be included in Follow-up services if the component has to be verified at a different location. John L. Allen, P.E.
