You may have heard by now, but this topic was discussed at the EMC
Symposium. As with most government issues, there was no firm date
applied to implementation. In Art Wall's words, "we are close". There
is still debate about approving US entities as CABs, and about
European submittals for the FCC.

In any case, when the MRA does go into force, there will be a 24 month
trial period. During this time, US designated CABs still will not be
able to make the final assessment. They will have to do so with a
final check/approval of a EU Notified Body. So, it is at least 2 years
off before a US CAB has 'full' authority.

When that finally does happen, the new RTTE (Radio & Telecom Terminal
Equipment) may be on the books. When it becomes mandatory (~2-3
years), it will eliminate much of the Notified Body review. This makes
the CAB status worth less (not worthless!), because it will allow more
self-certification in this area.

I hope that this muddies the waters enough for you!

Subject: USA-EU MOU

A couple of months ago, the USA and EU signed a document that takes
us
closer to the full implementation of mutual recognition of
certifications.
However, it is still not clear to me when we in the USA can expect to
be
able to submit transmitter test data to a USA based certified body
and
obtain the equivalency of an EU Type Examination Certificate.

Was this issue discussed at the Symposium? If so, can someone fill us
all in
on the latest info.

Thanks,

Richard Woods
