I have benn into the same problems. We droped using Reed Switches for safety interlocks. One reason is that our products have to comply to the Machinery Directive in EU which is not very clear on this subject. For IEC 950 (which is the standard for our products) there should not be a problem as long as the switch is located in ELV or SELV circuits, you will just have to do some extra test on the switch. If the switch is located in the mains or HV circuits FORGET IT and use real safety interlock switch (SAIA have some good ones.) ( TUV, VDE, etc. ) Most manufacturers have a UL and CSA certification with a 100k cycle testing time. The application I have for this switch is to provide interlock protection to a hazardous area. Has anyone had any experience getting UL certification (3101) using Reed Switches without an European cert.???? Are you aware of any reason's the European agencies do not certify these components ?
