re: Active cancellation. I have done this, using a (second) bicon on a tripod, and was close to putting a more practical system into use at a former employer. The military uses an adaptive null system to deal with communications jammers, and several companies sell second-antenna noise and interference nulling equipment to ham radio operators. However, if Muriel is asking about CONDUCTED emissions, which she may be, what I describe here and in my post to her, is not exactly what she needs.
Not that it couldn't work; she would need a low frequency antenna; simply turning a loop would, I think, be enough to null the radiated ambients with which she wants to deal.
