Hi Group:
We provide a 1-1/8 in. diameter hole (unthreaded) in the frame of
a commercial food equipment model which serves as the hole for 3/4 in.
trade size conduit. Frame thickness is 0.180 in.
Per the National Electrical Code, there's no reason that a 7/8 in.
diameter hole for 1/2 in. trade size conduit wouldn't work, but I'm told
that many times installers of the equipment want to attach an oversized
cord (instead of conduit) which is more-readily available. Putting the
proper sized hole in the unit would, therefore, frequently cause problems
at installation. I also believe that UL will criticize use of the larger
hole since it's not , technically, needed.
Question for the group - Does anyone know of a commercially
available reducer or bushing that we could provide with the unit that
would reduce hole size from 1-1/8 to 7/8 in. diameter? Such a reducer
could then be removed in the field, if desired, to reveal the larger hole,
thus satisfying all concerns. Keep in mind that the hole is not threaded
and that such a reducer would need to be inexpensive.
