Hello Peter & all,

regarding Brazil, for telecom & radio equipment subject to ANATEL approval,
a new scheme is going to be adopted in short (it was scheduled for final
May). In this new scheme, draft regulations containing safety & emc
requirements were also published.

On one side, EMC draft includes both radiated and conducted emission
requirements, EMI and strength requirements, based on IEC and CISPR
standards with some modifications. On the other side, electrical safety
draft contains protection requirements against acoustic shock, fire risk,
electrical shock and overheating, based on IEC and ITU standards. However,
they are less restrictive and do not cover some important issues as
mechanical strength, protective earthing or information to be included in
the users and operations manual.

For other goods, as far as I know, there exists voluntary standards based on
standards from the Brazilian Standardisation Body (ABNT). EMC standards are
based on CISPR standards. Regarding safety, some comments were sent to this
list and it seems like Brazil is going to adopt a similar scheme for safety
as the one adopted in Argentina (harmonisation for MERCOSUR).

If somebody out there has additional/different info, I would appreciate your
info/corrections.

Bye for now,

Alejandro Torrecilla
