Hi All, What do an AM radio, a copper tape spark gap, two paper cups, and a cable have in common? Together they can be used as a quick way to evaluate the relative shielding effectiveness of a shielded cable.
This month's Technical Tidbit at http://www.dsmith.org uses the copper foil spark gap of last month's Technical Tidbit to generate severe EMI for testing the relative shielding effectiveness of a shielded cable. Data is presented for two different grades of RG-58/U cable. It could equally well be used to get an idea of the immunity level of a printed wiring board or electronic system. Techniques such as this can get you out of a tight spot in the lab while trying to debug a system. It seems the right equipment is never available so quick and easy tests such as this can be a real time saver. Also posted are pictures (link is just above the Technical Tidbit article at the bottom of the index page) of London and Oxford in England taken while on a trip to teach my high frequency measurement and design course at Oxford University last week.
