I once toured a steel mill (Interlake?) in Chicago which had a huge AC
powered furnace. The high point of the tour was standing under the bowl of
the furnace, looking up at the 30-foot wide bowl and huge trunions, and
watching the looped power cables dance in the Earth's magnetic field as the
servomotors controlled the electrode-to-puddle arc distance.

There's probably a law against that now!
