Hello Group,
We have acquired an EN61000-3-2 test setup that includes the Harmonic
Current Emission measuring device and a separate AC power source that is
manufactured by a reputable company.  Upon inspection of the power
source, I discovered it was set up to provide a 230Vac 50 cycle power
via 115Vac on each leg instead of the proper 230Vac single phase +
neutral and protective earth.  Consulting the mfg. of the measuring
device, I was surprised to hear that the power arrangement was
acceptable to measure the harmonic current emissions(In his opinion).  I
don't claim to understand the physics of the test in it's entirety,
however that would seem to go against the intent of the test so I
decided to consult the mfg of the AC source to see what it would take to
modify the unit to true single phase Euro power.  The expensive option
is to retro-fit the unit with a new module(seems as if I am always in
need of a new module of some sort).  The cheap option would be to set up
the device for a 3 conductor split phase 230Vac hot + Neutral + earth
arrangement.  This too seems unacceptable for this emissions test and
most immunity tests, since most immunity tests require the AC mains of
the device being subjected to immunity events at various phase angles of
the input power signal.  If you have multiple phases, how can you be
sure you are subjecting the device appropriately, and in the case of
harmonic current emissions, that you are getting accurate data?
 
Or maybe, I am just splitting hairs....
