My ***ther 1240 definitely dims my lights when it comes on or comes out of
standby, I live in an older house with older wiring.  But it has no effect on
my desktop computer or other electronic loads, with which it shares a common
power strip.  How important is it to avoid even a momentary turn-on transient?

I had a laser printer that flashed all the lights (at about 1 Hz) in my home 
office whenever it was switched on. It drove me nuts. When I contacted the 
vendor about this issue, I was informed they were not expecting the $400 
printer to be used in a home office environment. Imagine that.

Yes....Unless it has a 10F capacitor that needs to be charged upon power up 
:-)  I think that the "examination" is meant to look for such problems.
