Actually..... /Whine mode on/ I have found EMC testing of component power supplies to be a bit more "taking" than end-use system testing. My employer must invent all manner of PRE-compliance test conditions and attempt to emulate many of the different installations used by customers.
With the exception of ESD, most EMC tests take a bit longer than equivalent testing that I have performed on end-use equipment at previous employers. /Whine mode off/ Just my humble and confused opinion... luck, Brian All, I just want to make sure that everyone understands that I've had relatively good experience with Vicor parts. Their tech support has been supportive. Their people have been helping me even before I posed my question to the EMC-PSTC. I go through great pains to select components with the proper testing/approvals to back them up; and yet we almost always meet some sort of compliance test SNAFU. This has happened with parts from all sorts of manufacturers (including ourselves). As a product manufacturer, I envy the component manufacturers, such as Vicor, in that they only have to EMC test a component, not a system with 26 different ports and peripherals...; however I understand that they must pull their hair out trying to support the thousands of different applications that their users come up with. I also take comfort in the fact that I am probably the only person who will ever compliance test our products. I have the advantage of "single jeaopardy". A component manufacturer gets their products tested possibly hundreds of times a year. I would be amazed if this testing doesn't turn up a surprise or two. So, please cut Vicor some slack; but please keep those design tips coming. I'd like nothing better than to keep NetTest and Vicor both in business :-) Thanks, Chris Maxwell
