Alex Is the device being placed on the market or being given to the customer as an evaluation unit? My understanding is that if it isn't being placed on the market then CE marking isn't required - as the principle of CE marks is about the free movement of goods for sale. However, the product must comply with the essential requirements egg it should not interfere with other equipment and should not be able to cause injury during use. See page 19 of the following document which mentions prototype units: http://www.dti.gov.uk/strd/emcps00.pdf If you are selling the device then I think the CE requirements must be adhered to. I believe you don't need a D of C for evaluation units - but you do need to apply good engineering practice.
