Dan, a very good link. Staying with a single GND plane greatly simplifies things. At some point two GND planes might be needed- with a 32 bit A/D perhaps? To reduce the DC voltage drops one can use a 1 oz GND plane rather than a 1/2 oz. Much time can be spent modeling, characterizing the A/D and that sort of thing. Sometimes it is quicker to layout the PCB with a single GND and then modify it with an extra couple of layers for an analog and a digital ground. Have both made and see if there is a significant improvement that is worth the extra layers. And, even if there is an improvement, the simpler design might meet the design requirements anyway.
