After reading this thread and a recent one about vehicular immunity, I got to thinking. I want to live my life as safe as possible.
In order to prevent myself from getting electrocuted at home, I undid all of the wiring. In order to have heat during a power outage, I installed a woodstove. The woodstove is a cookstove as well. That way, I don't have to get bathed in 60Hz fields while I'm cooking. None of those dangerous microwaves floating around the house either. Electric blanket, no way. When it's cold, I just put one of those cast iron thingies on the cookstove to warm up for a while and wrap it in my blankets. Hair dryer. Don't need one if you don't shower every 12 hours. I only bath on warm sunny days. For exercise, I chop/split all of the wood by hand with a two man cross-cut saw and a go-devil. Chain saw fumes are noxious. I disconnected my telephone so that there wouldn't be any surges carried into my house. Cable TV? Just another chance to carry surges (and smut) into my house. Disconnected that too. I got rid of all of my margarine and make my own butter (no hydrogenated oils). For shortening, I use lard. (Snork, Snork) Cell phone? No way. Can't have those fields next to my head. Besides that, the monthly bill is bad for my heart. Pacemaker? Don't need one. Fit as a fiddle (see the part about the woodcutting above). I bought myself a horse, since it is immune to e-fields well in excess of 100V/m. For short distance transportation, I got a set of rollerblades (just for the heck of it). My God! I think I'm Amish!!!! I think I need a new career. There probably aren't many openings for compliance engineers in the Amish community. Although there are probably a couple of Amish safety standards related to the handling of razor sharp wood chisels, stationary gasoline engines and oil lamps. If you're not laughing by now. It has been debated in local newspapers around here because of the "Marcy South" line that runs through our area on its way to New York City. My EMC professor (yes EMC is a class at SUNY Binghamton) showed us a graph of a common household. The 60Hz fields near your average kitchen stove are much higher than the fields that you would experience under a large power line. Many people forget that proximity can make up for raw field strength. It would be interesting to know how much 60Hz I'm bathing in right now as I type at my computer. Dave, do us a little experiment. Measure the 60Hz fields right at your chair where you sit all day in front of the computer. How would that compare to a power line? A friend and I drove to a house he was interesting in buying so that we could measure the 60 Hz magnetic fields (it is near some big power lines). While driving I switched on the equipment and was surprised to measure such a strong mag field from the dashboard. I can't remember the actual magnitude but it was high.
