I've been in discussion with a colleage of mine about the temp/humidity style tests in IEC60068. IEC60068-2-2 is one. There are several.
The issues are: 1) having these tests done *voluntarily* for customers in the United States and, 2) that these tests are NOT required of the product. So, we have customers who would prefer equipment having successfully passed this testing for sale within the US. A place where EN/IEC style testing such as this for office styly Information Technology equipment isn't required. Ok, fine so far. I buy the standard, approach some environmental test lab, ask them if they can do these tests, they do, we pass ... done. Two questions are at stake here ... Now, the question gets transferred to say customers within the EU community. Still, the tests are strictly voluntary. Not required at all for IT equipment. More of a contractual requirement. Yet, now, do I have to get a hold of some lab associated with a Notified Body in order to get these tests done at 5 or more times the price I can get them done stateside or can I get the same lab here stateside to do the testing? In other words, more generally speaking ... If a customer in the European Community requires a manufacturer to do testing outside the scope of what is required testing for some piece of equipment, does this additional testing need to be done by a lab recognized by a notified body?
