A social hour with light refreshments will begin at 6:00 PM and the technical meeting will start at 6:30 PM. Paul Zdanowicz will be presenting an EMC related topic concerning ferrite cores for EMI suppression. Dr. Richard A. Anderson will be presenting a Product Safety related topic concerning RoHS compliance and process compatibility. If you will be in the area, please feel free to join us as NPSS membership or advanced notice is not required. Paul Zdanowicz is Product Manager for Fair-Rite Products Corporation in Wallkill, NY. His presentation will contain very useful information for the attendees to specify and choose ferrite components for EMI suppression. This information will help engineers and technicians to understand the basic operation of ferrite materials and components. Learning about the various materials available and how they perform will allow the individual to quickly choose a solution for their application. Topics to be covered include the basic operation of ferrite material, an in depth discussion of EMI suppression and the significance of test methods. All the information presented will help the attendees narrow the choices when choosing a ferrite solution. Paul Zdanowicz has worked at Fair-Rite as a Product Manager for 5 years. Prior to Fair-Rite Products, Paul spent 18 years designing magnetic components and providing applications support for various transformer and power supply companies. Paul earned a BSEE from the Polytechnic Institute of New York Dr. Richard Anderson is a Materials Engineer in Research and Development at M/A-COM, a Tyco Electronics company, in Lowell MA. In order to market and import electronics into European Economic Union, the materials used in the product must not contain six banned substances in concentrations greater than one part per thousand by weight starting in July 2006. The Peoples Republic of China and other nations are developing and passing similar legislation. To meet these requirements, a number of conditions must be met including Materials Declaration reporting, labeling standards, new part numbers, and even significant exemption issues. Beyond compliance, in order to achieve customer acceptance, parts must be reliable, cost effective, and compatible with the new, higher temperature processing required to assemble circuits with Pb-free solders. Richard’s presentation will provide valuable insight into methods to meet these requirements. In addition to his RoHS activities, Dr. Anderson is responsible for advanced packaging and processing technology development at M/A-COM. Development efforts include high frequency, reliable, packaging and assemblies for automotive environments. Attention to compatibility with the new, RoHS-driven, elevated temperature assembly processes is part of this effort. Prior to M/A-COM, Richard worked in advanced processing at Motorola, Foxboro Company, and 3M. A technical presentation should be 45 to 60 minutes in duration and be related to product safety. Although the presentation may reference your company and it’s services, the presentation must not be simply company advertising. We would also appreciate any slides or handout materials be made available for posting on the NPSS web site. Releasing presentation materials for posting is desired but not a requirement to make a presentation.
