Subject: RF Immunity 1-10GHz Pulse Modulation
Hello,
I'm looking for some advice on what equipment to purchase in order to do a
NEBS immunity test. I need to do 1-10GHz, 3 V/m, 1uS, 1kHz Pulse Modulation.
I have a Gigatronics 6062A signal generator, and an HP 8673B signal generator.
Both have pulse modulation inputs. What function generator model would I
need to perform this test?

One microsecond at a 1 kHz rate isn't very demanding for a function generator.
As long as the signal generator's modulation section can handle a one
microsecond envelope without too much distortion, then the function generator
that drives it is almost trivial.
I bought a Datron 5113 that gives 100 nS pulse widths, an EH-135A (10 nS), a
Chronetics PG-12 (100 nS) and a Racal P-25 (10 nS) off of eBay during the past
couple of years, and I paid between $15 and $35 for each of them. I'll bet
that something a whole lot more expensive will work just as well. <g>
BTW, I don't worry about traceable calibration for my function generators. In
fact, I don't even calibrate them at all. I just grab a cheap generator, and
then verify the width and PRR with a good, calibrated oscilloscope. If you
really want to be sure, you can put a crystal detector on the generator's
output to see how the whole system is handling those one-microsecond pulses.
