A good place to start researching is:

The generic material symbols are based upon the terminology developed in the
International Organization for Standardization publications covering
"Plastics-Symbols" (ISO 1043) and "Rubbers and Latices" (ISO 1629).

In the United States plastic products are marked with the three arrows with a
number inside the arrows. The number corresponds to the type of plastic used.

1 = Polyethelyne Terephthalate (PETE)

2 = High Density Polyethelene (HDPE)

3 = Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)

4 = Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE)

5 = Polypropylene (PP)

6 = Polystyrene (PS)

7 = Other
