I think the article is pretentious, and based
on all but facts.
We all know that a spectrum analyser is not
suitable for spectrum investigation on the
level that is required for reliably
determining if interference can happen.
Due to limited dynamic range all kind of spurious
responses may happen in the presence of GSM
900 or 1800 signals.
it seems as if the FAA just wants to prevent everything they
do not know, as no technical arguments are given
but for a minor chance of interference with notably unreliable
GPS systems. Any air liner relying on
GPS for critical landing will not survive long times.
No interference problems have been reported either.
It is, on the contrary, just like in medical equipment,
where the usage of GSM were prohibited due to badly
screened and EMNC ( EM Non-Compatible) medical
equipment. This is history now (in Holland).
The only GSM prohibition found today is in
intensive care rooms, and in the department of
sleep investigations for obvious non EMI reasons.
These Electronics and Cellular prohibitions
do retard the implementation of EMC in flight equipment.
Air line communication techniques are lagging
modern communication technology:
Modern air planes are still relying on narrow band
notorious interference sensitive AM communications
systems for flight critical information like
voice communication.
There is more to say, but for the moment it is
enough.
