One further comment to this subject. The original article quoted the MoD as saying that "immobilizers" were likely involved in the vehicle effects. This may be the key (now that John has told me what an immobilizer is). The vehicle OEM has likely proved and tightly controlled the EMC of their vehicle. However (at least in the USA) vehicle alarm systems are often aftermarket products. The installation is done by minimally qualified workers who have wide latitude in the routing of cabling, little concept of RF grounding & bonding, and likely never do two installations the same way. Considering that the alarm system is tied into the vehicle OEM electronics, it doesn't surprise me that aftermarket modified vehicles might seriously degrade the EMC of a vehicle.
