Dear Colleagues: I have a problem that I have been puzzling over for a while, and it finally occurred to me that I could probably get some help from all the fine & knowledgeable people on this list. The company I work for makes (among other things) products that are basically PCB-mounted relays in an enclosure, along with a rectifier & voltage divider on the coil side such that the relay can operate off of a larger voltage range. The contact ratings in question are not huge, 20 A @ 277 Vac and 2 HP @ 120 V and 277 V is about the highest we go. These products do not have any special type of applications, we do NOT rate, warranty, or recommend them for anything like medical, life safety, safety interlocks, military, aerospace, hazardous locations, etc. etc. Our main market is the HVAC & building automation industry. I have been asked about the possibility of putting a CE Mark on these enclosed relays, but I am having a hard time figuring out what standard to use. The Low-Voltage Directive would probably be the applicable directive, but I don't know what product standard to use. For U.S. domestic use, we are UL Listed under UL 508 (Industrial Control Equipment). Some of our competitors use UL 916 (Energy Management Devices) & UL 864 (Control Units & Accessories for Fire Alarm Systems). I am not familiar with UL 916 and UL 864, but I am fairly familiar with UL 508. The IEC equivalent of UL 508 is IEC 60947, as far as I understand it. When I look at the titles for that standard, the only section that looks applicable (maybe) is IEC 60947-5-1, Low-Voltage Switchgear & Controlgear, Part 5-1: Control Circuit Devices and Switching Elements - Electromechanical Control Circuit Devices. Is that the most appropriate standard? Should I be looking at a different IEC/EN standard? Does anyone on this list have past experience with IEC 60947 and/or IEC 60947-5-1? Should I be looking for an IEC equivalent to UL 916? Many thanks in advance for any information, -Camille Good Portland, Oregon - ---------------------------------------------------------------- This message is from the IEEE Product Safety Engineering Society emc-pstc discussion list.
