not all Li-ion batteries are made with a LiCoO2 cathode, there are 
also Manganese ("Spinell") types.

As far as I know, these are less hazardous, but contain also a bit 
less energy and survive less cycles.

They are used in high current devices as hand held tools or R/C 
planes (usually without protection circuits!).
