Hi All, My latest "Technical Tidbit" article is on board-chassis "grounding." This one is sure to stimulate a lot of discussion. The article is based on a trend I see in some industries that is causing a lot of trouble for designers (and work for me!).
Abstract: System designers sometimes try to achieve a single point of connection between circuit ground on printed wiring boards (PWBs) and the metal chassis of a system for a variety of reasons. Trying to isolate grounds in this way can cause significant immunity problems to stimuli like ESD and RF fields. Single and multiple point grounding arrangements will be discussed. This month's Technical Tidbit discusses methods of connecting circuit board "grounds" to chassis "ground." Sometimes a "single point ground" causes the very problems it was intended to prevent. An analysis is presented of connecting board to chassis grounds in electronic systems.
