Peter Howick, DTI. SI 2006 No. 3418, implementing the new EMC Directive 2004/108/EC, has been published, and comes fully into force on 20 July 2007. From that date all new Declarations of Conformity for apparatus must be to the new Directive, although apparatus with declarations issued prior to that date may be placed on the market before 20 July 2009 and put into service. There are relaxed requirements for apparatus intended for incorporation into a given fixed installation and otherwise not commercially available, and new requirements for those who have control of a fixed installation. The mandatory requirement for third-party involvement for apparatus for which harmonised standards have not been applied in full is removed, but there are additional documentation requirements, in line with other new approach directives. Forthcoming EMC standards for multimedia equipment. Martin Wright, BT. Two new standards, CISPR 32 and 35, are in development. When published in Europe as EN 55032 and EN 55035, they will replace existing standards for broadcast receivers and information technology equipment, EN 55013, EN 55020, EN 55022 and EN 55024. They are also expected to replace the EMC standards for AV and lighting control apparatus for professional use, EN 55103 parts 1 and 2. CISPR 35 introduces a new concept of considering individual functions for immunity performance rather than product types, since the latter are becoming increasingly meaningless as products incorporate ever more features. Martin is Chairman of the standards committee responsible for these standards, and will tell us the latest position. Cables in EMC testing, Richard Marshall. Cable placement during radiated emission testing can have a critical effect on measured emissions, and the results of some recent work on the subject will be presented. Richard has published widely on the management of the EMC of cables in the test laboratory and in the real world. He has a particular interest in the optimisation of Coupler-Decoupler Networks and Common-Mode Attenuation Devices. Recent design work has included analogue electronic and radio-frequency circuits and systems, with emphasis on the optimisation and cost-reduction of their electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). Tasks that joined these disciplines have been the design of a high-speed local area network interfaces to meet both functional and EMC requirements. Training and consultancy has been provided in all these areas and on the technical, organisational and quality aspects of EMC and CE-marking. As an active member of the IEE and now the IET he has organised colloquia on "EMC and Circuit design", on "EMC of software" and on "EMC and Broadband for the last mile". He was a member of the IEE working group on EMC and functional safety. He has had a lifelong interest in radio communication. EMC requirements for radio equipment.
