Chris, I can think of several reasons:-
1. It provides an objective assessment of safety for general product safety / product liability considerations. You will have demonstrably demonstrated due diligence. 2. With the Ethernet and modem connections and the obvious possibility of being connected indirectly to a telecommunications network, it can be used to meet the requirements of the R&TTE Directive, which applies the LVD without voltage limitations. 3. As an obvious extension of a item of ITE, it will allow you to demonstrate that it also meets the requirements of the ITE safety standard. The assessment should be fairly straightforward as many sections will be 'Not Applicable' since you have no mains circuits. In essence you will just be assessing it as a secondary circuit, probably minimum creepage and clearance dimensions that your CAD system can check for you, and flammability of PWBs and any plastics. Some of our devices are EN61010-/UL61010 and I suppose that would be better. Even so that standard recognizes EN60950 for the LAN/WAN and telecome detail. But regardless of the European standard choosen the LVD topic still is my issue. Is there reason why the product should be reviewed despite the 24VDC rating?
